Thousands of livestock dead in freak rains
At least 500 families in Marsabit North and the neighbouring districts are counting losses after freak rains caused the deaths of thousands of livestock.
The sudden downpour on Wednesday night caused the deaths of over 8000 goats, sheep, camels, donkeys and cattle.
According to the Kenya Red Cross Society, the already weak livestock that had faced the full brunt of a severe drought were being driven to watering points, located over 50km away.
The animals reportedly succumbed to pneumonia following the heavy rains experienced in Bubisa, Maikona, Turbi and the surrounding areas.
The Kenya Red Cross Society is carrying out an assessment in the affected areas, which recently benefited from a destocking exercise that enabled pastoralists to sell over 6,000 livestock in a bid to reduce livestock numbers in the wake of the severe drought.
The society has also embarked on water trucking services in some schools and households in Marsabit and other parts of Upper Eastern Region.
